I am replacing the water pump on my 1937 Chevy 1 1/2 ton truck with a 216 engine. My rebuilt water pump came with a thin cardboard (paper) gasket. I'm trying to determine if I need to use some sort of gasket sealer to get a good leak free seal. I thought I would search the internet for a quick answer. I think I'm more confused now than I was before as there are about as many opinions as there are people posting. So I decided to ask the experts on here since many of you have "been there and done that" with this specific engine. Gasket sealer or not and if so what kind?

Thanks,

Brian

right, wrong or indifferent; I used my go to Permatex Aviation form a gasket on my water pump on my "37. It claims to be both gas and water proof. Of course may be completely different as my 216 is probably much more modern and advanced than your '37 as mine came out of a '39. LOL Others will probably chime in and give actual correct advice.

The radiator to fan clearance on my '37 was extremely tight.
I bought a water pump with a shorter shaft and that made things way easier.

I use a thin smear of Permatex Form A Gasket #2 on both sides of the gasket on water pumps and fuel pumps...

My" go to" sealer for most water, oil, and gasoline gaskets is Permatex "Super 300" It's a dark brown, almost black brush-on liquid that remains slightly pliable more or less forever. It's not the same stuff as the chocolate brown "3-something" Permatex (3-D or 3-H) as it was specifically designed to resist aviation gasoline in the mid-1950s or earlier. It's available on Ebay.
