Yesterday, five US Army Special Ops personnel were killed in a refueling/air/helicopter accident in the Mediterranean and the story is now making the national news.
One of those killed was 26 year old Tanner Grone. Tanner was a good friend of our son, Hunter. They graduated together, camped, hiked, canoe camped and played BB. His family attended Hunter's HS graduation party here. Hunter took his sister to the prom, and was a part of this small family hanging out, sleeping over, and helping at the Grone's house. Nice, hard working , and humble family in this small northern NH community.
We watch these kids grow from pre-school to beyond, invite them into our homes, share in their stories, and in some cases see a young life tragically end while in their prime. Tanner is a hero.
Hunter called early this morning with tears in his voice telling us this sad news. We're all kind of sad today and at a loss for words. Feel terrible for the family. seems as if these sad news stories and affected families always occur in other places far away from here. But, this hits home and ripples out to many in this community.
Hunter second and Tanner third from left. Picture taken just yesterday about 10 years ago.

Tom, Sad indeed. Our heartfelt condolences to the families of those warriors and their communities. Once again, we are reminded that Freedom isn't free and these folks now tragically understand just how terrible that cost is.
The Tip of the spear is not a friendly place.

Condolences to the young patriot's family. He was one of 200 young people these days who were willing to put aside their personal lives, career plans, and other concerns to stand in defense of our freedom. Back in my father's B-17 flying days that number was 11%, and by my time in the 1970's it was down to 3%. My grandson was one of the 1/2 of 1% of his peers to make that choice. Somehow it seems we might be heading in the wrong direction! Jerry

Tom, This is too important to have it drop out at the end of the Spoon's 30-cycle. We've moved it to the Legion Hall. Hope you don't mind that we also re-titled it. It is a sad day for many of us as a young patriot is no longer with us.

It hits close to home no matter where we live. My wife (and likely my parents but they never said) figuratively lived that scenario many times. My wife and I were very moved upon hearing the newscast. Heartbroken for the Grones. Glad for your supportive community.
