Well, I cranked the 1940 216 today... ran rough but ran. I had rebuilt the dizzy with new parts, cleaned the 216 R-B carb, mounted it and added a non-funtionable R-BC to cover the other Offy carb port. Using a starter and fuel pump from the shelf, I added a 12v coil since a 12v battery would be used for trial. Ran some gas up to the carb, a hot wire to the coil and it fired up. Timing is not right, so I will check that out tomorrow. Oil pump shot a stream 10 feet. Shut it down before it got hot as I don't have coolant plumbed yet.

If you want to make a longer run, just plumb a garden hose to the water pump inlet and a drain from the top hose, with the thermostat removed. You don't even need a fan belt- - - -just keep a steady flow of water going, and control the temp by how much water you flow through the engine.

Do you eventually plan to install a normal intake manifold or will you find two matched carbs?

Think I'll get it running good and decide it's fate then. My thoughts are to sell the Offenhauser dual intake and try to find someone in need of a running, numbers matching 1940 216 with 120+ lbs compression. I don't have a 216 intake to replace the Offy with, but I do have a 5590 ('53-'55 235) intake on the 216 that I pulled out of my truck. I'm not spending any money on this engine at this time.

I have a 216 intake/exhaust manifold from a 1952 car that I scavenged from my wife's Granny. I am beaver trapping in your neck of the woods this week. Let me know when you'll be home, or I can just drop it off at your shop.

“non-funtionable R-BC to cover the other Offy carb port” Is that carb sucking air? If so, That would sure mess up your fuel-air ratio. I’m surprised it ran at all. Please clarify if I misunderstood.

Why not just block off the extra carb flange with a piece of flat stock? The engine won't care if the carb it's running on is a few inches off center for a test stand run.

I found a stock 216 manifold. Freed up the flapper and installed it. The 216 model B Rochester is warped and runs like crap but does seem to fire all 6 cylinders. Going to put the 216 throttle body on a known good B from a 235 and try that.

Shouldn't that swap work for testing, Jerry?

Mixing and matching carb bodies and throttle bases is a crapshoot, but anything that mixes air and fuel including squeezing a shop rag soaked in gasoline over the manifold should work for a test run. Just watch out for backfires!

10-4. How about using the BC throttlebody? It's a 235 carb but has oblong holes to fit either 216 or 235. Could mount it on the good carb. Still mix'n match, but would at least be a 235 body on a 235 carb.

Thanks to 52Carl I have a complete manifold but have'nt had the time or the weather to try another run. Got the numbers off of the generator today after scrubbing the plate with Scotchbrite and xylene. Best I can read with a light and magnifier is...
1102685 1G19.... or... 1102635 1G19
Hard to tell if it is an 8 or a 3.

I think it is 1940 vintage.
The starter is a 1107009 8L-9, which is from 1940.
