I’m preparing to remove the starter from my 1955.1 235 engine. Two questions:
1) Is there anything in particular that I need to be aware of in advance that will make removal easier; and
2) would you recommend having the starter rebuilt to 12 volts since I’m in the process of already performing a 6v to 12v conversion for the truck?

Thanks.

1. If I am doing this removal by myself I loop some 1/4" nylon cord through the gear activating mechanism and tie it off to something above to keep the starter from crashing to the floor.

2. I rebuilt my 6 volt stomp starter (new bushings, brushes, springs from O'Reilly's and switch) 40,000 miles ago and it has been running on 12 volts with no problems since. I drug a blade made from an old piece of hacksaw blade through the gaps between the commutator segments to remove the mica insulators to 1/32" or so below the segments. Then I cleaned up the commutator with some 120 grit sandpaper (the maintenance manual calls for "No. 00 sandpaper", but I don't know what that is; DO NOT USE Emory cloth - the residue conducts electricity).

If you want to run a 12v starter you will have to change the ring gear on the flywheel as he gear pitch is different.

As has been noted by many, 6v starter will run fine on 12 volts.

What BC59 said.
I might add... one cannot "convert" a 6v unit to 12v. 6v has 2 sets of field coils and brushes while the 12v has 4, umong other differences which make interchange impractical if not impossible.
