Hi to all,
I purchased a 1956 Chevy 6100 with a dump box a couple months ago and finally got it home a couple weeks ago, but I've been lurking and reading in the big bolts forum for awhile now.

I've found a tremendous amount of great information on my truck and where to find parts, kits, wheels and tires. The truck seems to be in pretty good shape for its age and location, it has a 261 6cyl 2 speed vacuum shift rear end and what looks to be a Galion dump box 9x20 tires ( junk) and 5 widow maker wheels #6 wheel isn't a wm.

Brakes are a no go but E brake is outstanding 👏 I did rebuild the carb at po's property to get it to run and drive on his land the dump box works fine. ( It was full of rotten lumber and had a birch tree growing in it. )

Once home, I changed oil/filter and thermostat ( now warms up to 180 ). It's running fine off a 1 gallon gas can due to skunky old gas in the tank.

The gauges all work as do the lights and wipers. I do plan to remove the box but leave the hydraulics in place so it's easier to get at all the stuff along the frame it also makes it easier to have it in my shop.

First thing to do is get the brakes working and flush out the cooling system and heater then move on from there.

I really appreciate all the information in this forum its kept me busy reading and downloading info. 😊

DougH6100 , Thanks yes they are cousin's! mine from janesville wi. I've been going backwards through the bb forum reading through all the posts and yours I'm following closely. The Google pictures are great very detailed, makes it easier to get it back together! Since winter is close at hand I need to get the dump box off soon so I can work on the mechanical things inside over winter, I will be sending you a few pm's later on if you don't mind seeing your going down the same road ahead of me. One thing I'll ask now is where did you end up with your tire and wheel combo? Thanks again Mark. BTW nice shop

I ended up buying a parts truck from Nebraska that had 6 one piece steel rims, haven't wrapped them in rubber yet. This winter I'll have the rims powder coated. From that parts truck I used the front and rear leaf springs, front spring hangar mounts and will end up using the two front fenders and other sheet metal. Also the axles on the parts truck are in much better condition than mine. Being in the salt/rust belt is no joke, my truck is a very rusty and pitted. My truck has family history, more a labor of love than anything else, that is the only reason I'm spending this much time and energy on it.

I ended up cutting the dump box off mine. I saved the hoist mechanism and will end up building a flat bed for it. Not much use for a dump truck be a flat/steak bed will come in handy.

Not much use for a dump bed.. til you gotta unload firewood outta that stake side by hand!

When I was little, my Dad bought a '65 Chevy C60 from the local gas utility, and it had a flatbed. He used it to harvest firewood, and we didn't have to unload bucked up logs out of it for very long before he spent the bucks to have it made into a dump bed.

We did the same with our Farmdawg. We added the dump mechanism to the flatbed. We had a lot of stuff to haul and dumb and dump around the farm.

He said he saved the hoist, but didn't specify if he was going to use it under the flatbed he is building.
I guess that was my assumption, but his post really isn't clear on that.
Doug, maybe you could clarify that for us.

I can see how this statement may have been misinterpreted, I will be installing the hoist mechanism back onto the truck, but I will build a flat bed for it, very similar to picture John posted

I kind of figured that , I found the tag on my box today and I stand corrected it is a Budd.

My 58 has an 8x13 flatbed on it, that dumps. It is real handy for going to the dump, or scrap metal yard! Way faster unloading than loading! lol

Gotta love those labor saving devices!!
