Does anyone know how the weird joint thing works at the end of the first section of the steering shaft. I re did the steering, new bearing, steering box etc. Put the joint back together like it was. There is some play in that joint now. I can pull the steering wheel up toward me almost an inch. I can see the movement in the weird joint.

Thanks in advance,
Mark

Is the column moving or the shaft inside the column?

ole green,

Not sure if it may help, but here is a coupling rebuild video of the same style steering joint (used on multiple brands/years/models) that may help out???

There is also good info in the video about a common rebuild kit (specified for Jeeps) that works in the vast majority of such joints. It is much cheaper than trying to find/order an NOS or reproduction joint.

You said you replaced your steering box. You didn't by chance change from manual to power steering???

That was a great video. It jogged my memory from when I previously had it apart. It's been a while. I will need to get it apart to understand where the movement is coming from though.

Hambone, Just the shaft. The column doesn't move. Not long after after I noticed the steering shaft movement, my turn signal lever became very hard to operate. I took the wheel off and discovered my upper steering shaft bearing had come apart. The bearings fell out and were interfering with the turn signal assembly, making at it very hard to move the lever. Maybe that is the cause of the movement. Does that make sense? I also wonder if the spring in that universal joint is broken or weak. I don't understand what the spring does.

Thanks;
Mark
