Hi Gord, yes I poured through the sites looking for info and that’s how I confirmed the 51 GMC 9314. But the engine is eluding me. The standard reference does not work on my engine and I need to know in order to arrange for parts on either a 216 or a 235. It is very important for me to keep matching numbers on this truck which is why I will be re- sleeving it.
Number on plate behind the distributor is the same as the plate C487058.
Jerry I will check for the sheet metal on drivers side. But will still need to narrow it down to proper displacement. I thought I had a 216 at first but in all my reading from Oshawa plant it could very well be a 235. I’m so confused.

Silver Fox Dist,

I'm gonna move that last post to the Engine forum. I think for this question, you'd get more exposure there ... and more answers.

I've linked to this Welcome Centre thread for references -- so everyone can see what Gordon and Jerry posted.

Hope you all can help. This looks like a neat project.

Can you find the block casting number? That will help you ID the engine.

Hy Silver Fox Dist, your 1951 9314 left the factory with a 216, who knows what may have been done to it in the last 72 years?

Most 216's have a sheet metal pushrod cover that extends all the way to the valve cover. There were a few 1950-52 spray-oiler 235's with a short cover that did not overlap the cylinder head. I don't think I've ever seen a 216 with the short side cover.

If the engine serial number matches the door tag then it’s very likely the original 216 engine
Send a photo of the stamped numbers and the block casting number next to the fuel pump and also a general photo of the distributor side of the engine.

Many Canadian 216s have short side covers
I own a few of them
A 51 and 52 would be exactly the years for short side cover 216 engines

Silver,
I had a 1950 Chev one ton and its engine had a similar casting number. I don’t recall the actual casting code, but I do remember that it also started with a C. After much digging, it turned out that it was a low pressure 235.

This question of mine is directed to the rest of the community reading this: At one point, didn’t Stovebolt have a thread going that had an actual engine “search engine” for casting codes? I remember using it, and it was very slick. I can’t find it now.

Thanks Gord, spent the night doing a few searches and feeling once again like an idiot that does not know what he has!
The casting number is. 3695408
Head number is. 3695451

I cannot seem to find either of these numbers. Any further thoughts?

Your prediction is correct. 3695408 and head 3695451. This engine matches the vin plate so I need to keep it. I just want to know what it actually is.

Silver Fox Dist,

While I don't have a direct answer on your engine ID question (yet) you may find some useful information about Canadian GMC engines in the Old GMC Trucks various web resource links.

More to come as I can get a bit more sleuthing done. wink

This will save you a few clicks getting to the Canadian info on OldGMCtrucks.com. Rob (headmaster on that site) admits that he doesn't have a lot of the Canadian GMC answers.

I think 2ManyTrucks has your answer. See this thread:

Thanks everyone, I have found two corroborated listing one from 2 many trucks and believe I in fact have a 216CID engine with 235cid heads that came stock on that year. Would have been nice to have a 235 cid but since this truck will only be used for Silver Fox Distillery events and promotions its life will be pampered and easy. Plus it will be the wife’s truck when finished. So it is more important to have matching numbers than performance and reliability.

EDIT BY MODERATOR 9/18: The next question (below) was broken out as a separate thread in order to get more responses here.

Next question if you don’t mind. Who is everyone using for engine parts supply? I have ordered all my body panels from LMC and that is more than enough to keep me working all winter. But would like to get a start on ordering parts for the engine rebuild.
