Hello have a 53 ,3100 ,with the round heater core mounted under the dash , 216 motor. Heater hose connections are on the thermostat housing and one on the water pump. Does it matter how the heater hose are connected to heater core? Or which way are they to be connected. Thanks

I installed the new ones the same way the red ones were. Works perfectly. Same round heater core as yours.

A heater core will flow either way. The pressurized coolant comes from the thermostat housing, and returns to the water pump. That also keeps coolant circulating through the engine during warmup before the stat opens, unless someone has installed a cutoff valve in one of the heater hoses.

You might consider installing a shut-off on the pressure side so you can shut it off in summer. I have seen many with a gate-valve installed at the thermostat housing. A quarter-turn valve would work just fine too if there's room to turn the handle.

Related - when I swap in my 235 engine (from 58 car) I don't plan to connect the heater; Can I just plug the two ports in the pump and the T'Stat housing, vs having a hose loop between them?
I seem to recall one post that said at least a loop HAD to be included but that was perhaps related to a 261 engine?

Yes. The engine isn't going to know the difference. You can either put a little shut off valve on the engine somewhere or loop it or block both inlet and outlet all together since the engine cooling system is completely independent from that of the heater core. The trucks were sold without heaters unless you paid extra to get one and so there would just be a little brass plug screwed into those two holes

Luray,
Here is a picture of my In-line shut-off valve. I bought it at my local Napa. The cable is the "Throttle" from the dash. It works great. Off in summer On in winter.
Good luck.

Thanks @Otto Skorzeny - I plan to use plugs in the ports.
