I have a new speedometer in the dash so I’m guessing it is a problem on the trans side. I’m working on getting the trans out now and wanted to ask what’s involved in taking the speedometer fitting out of the trans and replacing it with a new one after I get the trans on the bench.

Assuming you're talking about a 3-speed tranny, the speedo gear in the tranny slips on the shaft, followed by a sleeve and then the u-joint yoke, held on by a bolt that prevents the gear from slipping on the shaft.
I have my doubts that the problem is in the tranny. You can check to see if the adapter is working once the driveshaft u-joint is disconnected from the torque tube. Put the tranny in neutral and turn the u-joint and watch for motion at the speedo adapter.

You could have a bad speedometer right out of the box, I went through 3 that never made it to 1000 miles. I've repaired several of them...not the new ones. The old ones are worth repairing but the new ones...not so much.
