Hello all and thanks for the welcome. I tried to find all the answers without asking the same questions, but couldnt find them all. I have a 1941 (I believe) GMC 2 ton 248 6 Body tag reads CC303 and ser # 20465 Engine casting is GMC 2. 6107328 Above that cast upside down 2. 9. 71 Stamped pad is DR 97621
So Correct me if im wrong, 1941 248 I am curious what the other casting numbers might mean And the stamping doesnt follow any format ive been able to find. Thanks all, Jim
An original engine for your 1941 would have a block casting number of "6107326" and would have been a "228", not a "248".
I couldn't find info on the "Stamped pad" number you provided. An original stamping would have started with "248" followed by a serial number according to previous posts like this one.
Am sure fellow Bolters with more GMC knowledge will be along as they can to add info or ask further questions to help identify what you have.
Good luck in your search.
Dan

Thanks Dan, thats what I understand on the stamping as well ( first 3 are the displacement) not mine. But also I saw 228 and 248 started in 1939. But I have no experience with this motor. Had my share of Chevys not Gm's. Thanks again, Jim
The engine serial number (1st 3 digits are engine size) are on a machined surface just to the rear of where the distributor enters the engine block.

I've never seen one like that. Obviously not stamped at the factory because it is so uneven and different fonts. All the factory replacement engines I've seen have the first 3 digits (engine displacement like 228, 236, 248, etc) stamped and the rest blank so that the end user can stamp it to the same number as the original engine in case that number was used on the truck's title.
The casting number list over on OldGMCtrucks.com says 6107328 is used on 53-54 248 blocks, but I just realized that list doesn't include any 248 blocks earlier that '53. The 228 block casting number is shown as the same for 39-53, so it could be that your 248 casting number is correct for all but 1955 248 engines.
Have you found the casting date on the block?

By the way, the 248 engine was used on 300 and 400 series GMC trucks prior to 1954. Wasn't used on smaller trucks except in 1954 and 55.

24 = 24th day of the month. 1st thru the 9th is just a single digit.
5 = 1945 probably. There were 248 engines made in 1955, but Aug 24, 1955 would be very close to the end of 248 production.

Great Thanks, maybe the truck is 1945 also ? I was thinking 41 for only 3 reasons. A little chrome on it not counting the grill ( I can see the grill was a brushed on chrome) The running lights are 2 piece metal cast and stamped sheet metal And the back window trim is metal. But thats only from the last few weeks of research.
I hate to recommend another forum over Stovebolt, but the people over at OldGMCtrucks might be a better place to be regarding identifying pre and post war GMCs.

Thanks Bill, maybe I will , but think you guys have given me everything I need so far. Im thinking 45 not that that matters much, 42-46 the same right? And If it was a 41, why would it need a new motor in 45 ? Yes disasters do happen. But nothing else seems to be changed out. Im going with a 45 truck, original motor . Thanks again, sure I will have more to say or ask in the future.

According to "GMC Trucks Master Parts Book Models 100 thru 470" printed in 1954, CC-30x models were built in:
1941 with chassis serial numbers ending in 001-2000, 2001-20706, 20742-20769, 22001-28823 Jim's 20465 chassis serial number falls in 1941 1942 with chassis serial numbers ending in 20707-20741, 20770-21547 1944 with chassis serial numbers ending in 28824-32749 1945 with chassis serial numbers ending in 32750-46906 1946 with chassis serial numbers ending in 46907-49518
This same parts book says that the CC30x series trucks have either 228 or 236 engines with no explanation of which engines were used in which trucks. Further back in the same book under "8.0400 Cylinder Block" (which is sold as what we would call a "short block" - has pistons, crank, cam, bearings, etc.) makes no mention of a 236 engine, so by 1953 it looks like any replacement from GMC would either be a 228, 248, 270 or 302.

Thanks again Bill for all the great info. So back to probably a 1941 truck with a replacement motor 1945 (248). OR maybe the truck sat with the war until 45 when they completed it? Anyway I did try to sign up at the gmc site. Cant seem to make it work, wont accept my email addresses ( 2 diff ones )
