On my 1952 Chevy 3100 the hole in the transmission shifter lever that clamps to the shaft coming out of the transmission is wallered out causing a lot of play in the linkage. I’m hoping this is the reason the truck is popping out of 3rd gear. I looked at several parts catalogs but didn’t find this part. Does anyone know who sells it? Or should I just have the hole filled in with weld and drill a new hole?
My dad always told me, "Don't force it, get a bigger hammer".
I doubt that you'll find a new shift lever. But they're probably pretty plentiful used. You might post an ad in the Parts Wanted Swap Meet section here. Add a picture of what you need. If the play is in the hole where the transmission shaft comes out, it might be hard to repair, but if it's in the end where the shift rod attaches that wouldn't be a tough repair. Like you say, fill with weld and redrill the hole.

Try the weld, but I doubt that is why it jumps out of third. Most likely the clutch shaft gear is worn. Yuck.

Or maybe the shifter inside the tranny is worn. See pics. I machined the slot back to spec.

I rebuilt one that way on my 51 3100 back in the 70's. Welded it up and filed the slot until it fit the collar. Worked fine... my 54 3100 shift fork was not worn. Had to replace the clutch shaft, which was worn to a slight angle on the mating splines. Would gradually slip out.
