Most radios these days have separate BATT and IGN connections, so you don't need to worry about it there. Good advice. That would be a sure way to smoke a circuit the first time you forget to thru the main switch on before hitting the starter. If there's not a separate connection to your radio that needs constant power, a diode in the normal power circuit to the radio could be installed.

I would have thought it would be a lesson learned until he did it a second time... The school wouldn't let me fail him, so he graduated and went to work for Dodge...

Killing the power to the battery cable that supplies the starter will usually interrupt the voltage supply to the dash and ignition switch as well. Run an independent small diameter wire (with maybe a 5 amp fuse) to whatever needs a few milliamps of constant current to keep its memory functioning.
