I have an inoperable original radio. It looks cool. It’s going to stay and perhaps even get reworked one day. However, it has occurred to me during a recent speedometer job, that the radio speaker is in the way. Of EVERYTHING.
Can it be removed while keeping the radio in place? If so…how?
All I see is the two bolts at the bottom of dash. Can’t figure out where else it’s secured.
The speaker is inside the case which contains the radio. Two screws at the bottom and nuts on the threaded shafts that hold the knobs. That should get the radio out. There may be another attachment point in there but I do not think so. Getting the speaker grill off the dash after the radio box is out will give you greater access to everything.

I have the grill out. I figured the knobs were part of the mounting but got chicken about prying on them. What’s the trick there?
I’d like to leave the radio “receiver/ face plate” in the dash but temporarily lose the giant box that’s in the way of everything. Is what I’m describing even possible?
It all comes out in one unit If you have original knobs There is a set screw in the knob that releases it from the shaft Then the tone and dummy knobs slide off And then you can unscrew the nuts that hold the shafts in place The two bolts at the bottom come out And the whole radio is removed with two wires power and dimmer light to disconnect After market replacement knobs from even 50 years ago are press on and you only have to pull to remove Send photos and we can let you know what ya have -s
My 52 came with a delete plate, unfortunately the original owners son had slightly enlarged the mounting holes and installed a newer radio. I found a period aftermarket radio in a 49 gmc; it is a two piece with the radio mounting under the dash on the steering column and the controller mounted in the dash with flexible spring rods connected to the radio. The controller and face plate mated perfectly to the 52. The radio itself works with weak volume but is not installed. The original black piece of cardboard is still behind the grill blacking it out.
I’ll get some knob pics later. Understand that I need to take the one giant box out in one piece. But once I have it out, is it possible to break down into smaller components and put the faceplate back in without the rest of the giant box?
Yes you could disassemble the radio And bolt only the tuning assembly with faceplate into the dash But that would be a waste of a good parts as it will wear and get dirty and be useless as just the tuning head There is a proper delete plate you could use instead Or leave the hole open and hook your garage door opener and work gloves in the open hole -s
I don’t want to destroy any parts in this process. I’m ok with it being useless for a while yet. It’s been useless all along and it’s way down the list of priorities.
