Hi all! Really appreciate everyone on this forum and their advice! We’re working on our ‘49 Chevy 3100 PU 3 speed (3 on the tree) transmission and cannot get the stick on the steering column to into the gears fully᠁putting pics to try to explain better. We replaced the shift box thinking that was the prob but did not help. Can move one of the shift levers manually by the transmission but the other one won’t budge. At a loss what to do now. Appreciate any advice!

You need to disconnect the rods from the levers on the trans. If one lever is in gear the other lever will not move. With both levers in neutral move one lever forward & back. If it moves ok try with the other lever. If both work ok the trouble is in the linkage. It could be the bell crank pivot is lock up. When the rods are in the levers on the trans. the arms on the shift box should line up. If you loosen the nut on the lever on the shifting box you can adjust the rods. From one photo it looks like the 2-3 rod is out of adjustment. It may have slipped in the adjuster.

The adjustment of 2-3 shift rod could be the problem. Loosen the upper clamp on the 2-3 rod and set both of the shift levers on the side cover to the neutral position. Remove the grease cap on the shifter box and make sure the levers are centered in the shift box. When the shift box is centered in the neutral position, tighten the clamp and try it. More adjustment may be required. Be aware that every one of the contact points on that linkage is a possible wear point and can cause slop in the shifting operation. Fred

I don't know if you are having the same issue as me. If the column shifter is in the up position I have no problem going between R and 1st. I can drop down to 2nd and 3rd. If I try to pull it back up to 1st, it won't go up far enough for me to pull it into first. I have to grab the rod running along the top of the steering column and pull it up. There is too much slop at the connection between the shift handle and the shift rod.
Take the side cover off the transmission (4 bolts) and inspect the gears and the 2-3 synchronizer. Item number one is to make sure the transmission can shift internally before you start tinkering with linkage. If the gears are rusty or damaged, no amount of linkage manipulating is going to help. I have a few torque tube type 3 speeds stashed if you need to replace the transmission. Jerry

Also check the engine mounts under the bell housing. They look like the rubber is all ragged. That will throw the adjustments out. I sent you a private message.
