Hi all. My apologies if there is a thread already but I couldn't find anything, specifically and looking for advice.

Details:
I have a 1957 GMC, 347 pontiac engine with a 3 speed manual tranny bell housing. The starter and flywheel are original PN,s for the truck. I purchased this truck non running, sat in corn field for 35 years.

7 years later she is rebuilt in every aspect. Starter was rebuilt professionally and has a 9 tooth pinion gear. I believe the fly wheel is 168 tooth. New battery fully charged. The pictures I have when first removing the starter from the bell housing show no shims, just two mounting bolts. Went to turn over engine for the first time and the pinion gear hits the fly wheel without engaging flywheel teeth. The starter mounting ears are slightly bigger holes than the 2 bolts so the starter can be turned maybe 1/8" either direction when mounted. None of this adjusting helped. This starter mounts into the bell housing hole so I'm unclear how it can be shimmed or if needed to be. I did bench test the starter for kicks. Seems strong and ohms test / continuity test ok. I feel like I'm not seeing something simple. Any suggestions welcome. And thanks

The ‘57 with Pontiac engine would have been 12 volts, did you use the original starter to have rebuilt? Could rebuilder have given you back 6 volt starter that came on 6 cyl. 270 engines in that truck?

Looks like a GMC v8 starter to me. ( I daily drove one for 23 years before someone t-boned and totaled it ). The GMC starter is different than the Pontiac starter in that the solenoid is clocked at 5 o'clock, while same year Pontiac starters have their solenoids near 12 o'clock. They will interchange.

Good to know. I was under the impression the pontiac starter was an offset 3 bolt mount flange. GMC has two bolt mount 180 deg apart

On second thought Ed, I never thought about that. I'm not sure how a 6v starter would react under a load when 12 volts applied. When I bench checked it, it seemed to work as it should

6 volt starters work fine on 12 volts, just don’t lay on it.
