No doubt this question has been asked, but I'm new to this game, so please forgive me: Where can I find brake parts for my 1 1/2 ton? I'm located in southern NJ.

Hi Scott, welcome to the best site on earth!

Search this site a little (with search) and you will find some answers but I would start at NAPA for some things. You would be suprised. I'm sure others with more knowledge will post in. I haven't got there yet in my projects and I know it can be a challenge.

Glad to have you on the site.

So far I haven't found any of the parts store in my area that were not able to get me the master and wheel cylinders I needed. If you need brakes shoes, that completely differnt. Those you may have to send in and have relined.

be careful when folks say they don't have parts for your YEAR MODEL. Find out what years are the same for your truck and ask for the latest one. I have found many parts for say a 52 by asking for a part of a 57 if they are the same. Some stores may not list back to a 54 but back to a 57. If the 57 are the same you are in business!! Understand??

I have an old Napa brake parts catalog. It shows an early 54 with 1" front wheel cyls. & late 54 with 7/8" front wheel cyls. Also we need to know if it,s a 4000 or 5000 series truck. If your cyls. are not pitted to bad you can hone them out & put kits in them. They are readily available. I,ll be glade to look up the part numbers for you but i,m not shure they will still be available. The part no. on the shoes are B-299R front 14x2 1/2". RS-140 rear. 15x4".

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

So what parts are you short?
Your 1954 would be Bendix so might not be that hard to come up with.

Welcome Scott!

I, too, have had excellent luck with finding brake parts for my '49 4400 at NAPA. And I got the shoes relined at a big truck repair shop.

Send us a photo and write up of your truck(s) for the Gallery!

editor@stovebolt.com

And be sure to check out the rest of the site.

Thanks,
John

Contact Alretta Truck Parts, in Framington, Ma. (508)788-9409, be sure to ask for Geoff. I know alot of '47-'54 Big Truck owners that have used this place for brake parts.

I have found that many of the brake parts will have a multi year run. For example, 1955 car rear wheel wheel cylinders with work on a 1954 car. The lines to the cylinder are different, requiring different lines, but they can be made to work. And 1955 car rear wheel cylinders are very inexpensive.

I like NAPA or older "Mom and Pop" type auto supply stores that have the old catalogs and will take the time to look items up for you. There are still some stores out there like that and. I think, those stores are the key to finding your parts.
