I took the wiper motor out of my 54 3100 and lubed it up good trying to get them to work again. Motor worked real good sitting on the fender.. put it back together and it still cycled to the windshield edge and quit.
Took my daily 15/20 mile ride today when out of the blue they started working like a goose getting airborne at the pond... FopFopFopFopFopFop! Weren't working as they should but working non the less. Back to the shop.
Come to find out that the trans arm was hanging up on the repop defroster vent seam. A sharp wood chisel carved out the offending plastic and now they work like new. Hallelujah! Saved me a bunch of bucks replacing the motor!
I'm stoked!
Jethro.

Congrats thumbs_up Vacuum wipers look great flopping back and forth. Intermittent pauses, speed ups and slow downs...You can tell they aren't electric and really adds to the charm of an antique vehicle, IMO. Until they're all you have in a rainstorm. grin They work even better when paired with Rain-X.

Naaa... I looked under the dash as I operated the switch and saw the defroster hose move when the arm stopped. Took the glove box out for access and saw where the arm had been contacting the duct... right on the seam. Took the arm loose from the motor, operated it by hand and saw where I needed to trim. Used a sharp wood chisel and removed a big enough V from the seam to clear the arm. Bingo.

The repop is 2 pieces sealed together leaving a 3/16 or so seam. The original was most likely metal with no seam. The repop fit the truck perfectly with pop rivets but that dastardly seam was in the way.

Soooo... if someone has repop ducts and the wipers stop at full cycle, look for interference with the trans arm.
