Well I haven't put u-joints in a car for I'd say almost 50 years. I found the u-joints on my split drive shaft on my 1948 two ton to be just a bit of a learning experience. After struggling to press the joints in the closed ends of the yokes I noticed that it would be pretty dang hard to get a grease gun on the fitting. There is definitely no room to get a grease gun on the fitting if the fitting faces the open yoke, it has to face the direction of the welded end of the shaft. Even then, I would suggest a 45° fitting. Of course I had a 50/50 chance to get them correct, and failed on all three u-joints. Next time. Cheers.

I replaced the rear two of my three-piece drive shaft, I didn't have an issue with getting the gun on them, maybe I just got lucky or positioned them the same as the old ones.
