On a 1946 Chevrolet 1/2 ton truck, I just had my steering column completely rebuilt. It was returned to me with the gearbox painted correctly and the column primed (to have final coat) applied by me prior to reinstall.
The question on the table is…
A recommendation for a supplier of the BROWN color originally used on the column?

Even a particular product recommendation would be greatly appreciated.

Jim Carter supplies the Brown for the 1946 column. Link
It doesn't specify, but their other paint products are PPG ALK-200. I've used it and it works well. It's an acrylic enamel and sprays well right out of the can.

If you're smart enough to take it apart, you darn well better be smart enough to put it back together.

Did you use a hardener?

I haven’t used hardener in it. But I’ve only painted interior parts so far. I may use hardener on the exterior. It uses ALK-201 hardener. I haven’t found that in anything smaller than a quart. At 1:15 mix ratio I’d have a LOT leftover. wink

I’m a novice painter Just bought some from carter 57 truck interior gray acrylic enamel ppg
Looks thin right out of the can . Have som experience spraying but not with this type. Using a hplv gun. Question is is this paint ready to spray and do you have an option to use hardener?
Thanks

If it's the ALK-200, yes, you can spray it as it comes out of the can. I use a 1.3mm tip and it lays down nicely. You can also use the ALK-201 hardener if you can find it. At a 1:15 mix ratio it won't change the viscosity much, even if the hardener was like syrup. According to the data sheet for it, the hardener delays drying time quite a bit.
