I have attached an image of an oil filter can that I purchased and am wondering if anyone knows how to tell who it was made by, AC Delco or Fram or any others? Would like to clean it up and paint and add decals correctly. Thanks
Looks very similar to an AC S-6. Look HERE for more info.

Unit was very well rusted as you see from the attachment. The top had some red paint on it and the bowl/can had some yellow. There is a dimple on the bottom about an inch in diameter with an arrow and a letter or two, I believe it is indicating the outlet opposite of the dimple and the inlet is indicated on the top side of the can. Measurements are 4 3/4 i.s.dia. x 5in from the top of the can down the side to where the can curves to the center. That's it. The old filter was an All State filter ( that's the only thing i could read) but here were no numbers. The old filter measured about 4-1/2" dia. x 4-7/8" tall. But as of yet I still have not been able to find a replacemrnt filter cartridge. So should I look for an AC Delco filter # P-115 paper element from 1950? Thanks and enjoyed reading the facts on the filter cans.
I’ve seen NOS versions of that All State filter. Best I can tell, they were sold by Sears and would replace either the Fram C4-P or the Delco P-115.
The Allstate filter looks very similar to the Wix version of that element. Perhaps just a rebadge. The number of the older wix is escaping me at the moment.
The rusty oil filter canister looks like the one I use on Lurch. I use a Napa 1006 filter in it. I suspect the paint on my filter canister is original: orange can with black top.
All 216 and 235 engines (and 1954-57 261) require a bypass canister and a bypass filter (see picture). AC canisters are built to seal around the P-115 cartridge (see picture). Factory Chevrolets ordered with an oil canister were painted black. The P-115 can be replaced by WIX 51100 and is rated at 23 5 (FIVE) microns which is a finer filtration than conventional full flow filters. NOS metal oil cartridges can rust after sitting many years on the shelf.

If the Fram C-4P (old is C-4), and NAPA 1006 work, other old filter numbers that are equivalents are AC P-209, P-212, Hastings 101, Purolator P-34, Wix PC-1F, 51006. More obscure filters are Divco 4911, Hyster 57014, Mack 43-5BA-15, Waukesha 101711, 60368. This is according to research I did in 1976 when I bought my 54 3100. It came with the Fram bypass filter on it when I bought it. Samantha
I'm getting to the point where I'm making too many mistakes. I guess I need to stop adding to the posts.
The micron rating for a bypass filter is 5 micron. I said (23) above which is not correct. Sorry about that.
Fram C4P (with gasket) and C4 (no gasket): 5 micron 4.87 Height 4.328 Outer diameter 0.5 Inside top and bottom (seal)
WIX 51100 5 micron 5.0 Height 4.0 Outer diameter 0.55 Inside top and bottom (seal)
Whatever cartridge you use needs to seal good and is manufactured as a "bypass filter".
A little history:
AC Delco oil filters were made by the GM subsidiary. The sell off goes to Honeywell, Champion, Fram to Rank Industries to Trico Group. WIX filters originated at Gastonia, NC USA then became part of the German company MANN+HUMMEL. You can almost bet that all these companies outsource our filters to Asia.

Thank you to everyone who has replied. Still checking numbers for filters. One other question I have concerns the bolt on the top and whether or not it had a spring or o-ring? I did not have a spring on this can, but there is a grove cut for either an O-ring or a spring. I am assuming it is for the o-ring. I believe that groove is for a snap ring so the bolt stays with the lid.

Most of the canister filters have a beehive-shaped spring that holds the filter element down against the bottom so oil doesn't bypass the cartridge . There is a small metering hole in the center standpipe about 1/16" in diameter that controls the flow rate and prevents oil pressure loss to the engine. Jerry

I have two, one on a 235 and a large one on a 261. Both have the small end of the spring snapped into the groove.

This looks exactly like the one I purchased and have posted about. Thanks again! Missing from mine are the spring, small black 'U' bracket , a small cylinder or sleeve (I guess, under the oil filter in the photo) and the two special style "U" bolts. But most important I believe is the spring and the cylinder/sleeve, that I suppose acts as a shim or block to hold the filter cartridge up.? Would like some measurements on the black bracket. Haven't figured it out yet. Thanks again!
buoymaker, Could you send me another photo(s) of the spring and its dimensions along with the small sleeve that shows under the oil filter and the black u channel bracket? Don't know where to look for the spring but I need a start. Thanks
