Hi all,

I've got a 41 1.5 ton all original. I was doing some regular maintenance today and popped the tranny cover off and found a bunch of chipped gears and metal shavings. I only had the truck a year, and before me it was an active fire truck, so it was probably beat on pretty good.

Just wondering what my best approach is.
Should I look to rebuild the current tranny or is it possible to switch to something with syncros? Are there any syncro trannys that matche my stock 228 or would I need to swap the bell housing/is that recommended or should I avoid it? What else would I need to look at/for?

I would prefer to go the syncro route for ease of driving.

I made a post a few weeks ago about a cracked block that I repaired... So... At this point if someone had an entire powertrain I would be interested in swapping my current motor/tranny for one that would fit and have syncros. What would be a good powertrain match that would drop in, or does one not exist?

Besides my original question on "what tranny would fit/work" does anyone have a line on transmission parts, is my best bet this forum or there is a retailer?

Thanks!

kcolg Not very knowledgable on your year but some of the 41 guys should chime in . But yes I think there is bolt-up stuff that will fit in there to let you modernize up to synchonizers. Lot better to not have to double clutch so much !!

Read this thread Tired of double clutching??

A forum member outlines how to add an SM420 transmission to a '41 to '46 truck. You'll have to go to page 4 of the thread to see the pictures as the original link is broken.
