I was looking through my spares the other day and picked up the generator that I used on my truck before converting to 12 volts. It was working fine at the time. I I pulled the inspection band and the commutator is a grey silver colour. There is no hint of a copper colour. What would cause this appearance?

Oxidation of the copper commutator bars. A little non-conducting sandpaper (NOT emery cloth) held against the commutator while it's spinning in a lathe or a drill press will shine it up before putting it back into service.
