Starting easily and accelerating without hesitation or pinging is a fair indicator that things are set right.

For example, an engine with worn rings can be harder to start.
"Adding CFM to a truck will only help at engine speeds you don't want to use."
"I found there was nothing to gain beyond 400 CFM."
