This is the question my wife asked me as I was stopped in the middle of the road with oil pouring on the ground. Looks Bad as I smiled!
Any Sugesstion for a new motor? I want to keep the same tranny so I can run the PTO for the hoist. I was advised to put in a GMC straight 6, better yet put a 350,is this possible.
This is not a truck that travels far from home nor do I car to pour a bunch of money in just yet. I want to haul Gravel and or 200 buschel of grain when needed.
I need to know if I get a 6 out of a car verses a truck will that matter?
I have a neighbor that has a 235 out of a 57 Chevy 3/4 ton, what would this motor be worth. The truck has been sitting for awhile and I don't know what the condition is.

Thanks for any input!

Hy N D Loadmaster, We need a bit more information with which to make an intelligent suggestion. What year truck are we talking about, is it a Chev. or a G.M.C., what is the engine that now has the optional large drain hole in it?

I have a 48 Chevy Loadmaster 1 1/2, the motor that is in now is a 235 out of a 1950 chevy car.

A 54 up 235 would be your best bet. Car or truck either one would work.

They say money can't buy happiness. It can buy old Chevy trucks though. Same thing.

Hy again N D Loadmaster, as Wrenchbender Ret. said a 54 or newer 235 would be a virtual drop in and more reliable than the older engines with non precision rod bearings. Another choice would be its larger cousin the 261, also a virtual drop in.

Your neighbors 57 235 motor would fit without too much trouble. Water pump clearance is about the only issue. I price a motor I am buying as if it needs to be rebuilt unless it is running to show otherwise. $100 is a good place to start.

If you are patient someone will give you one they are removing. People installing V-8's rarely value the six very high.

If you're going to go thru the process of replacing the motor, i'd go with something worth putting in.

My vote would be for a full pressure 235 which would be a motor out of anything 54 or later I believe, or a 261 if you can lay your hands on one.

If/when either of the stock motors in one of my '46s goes south, thats what i'll replace 'em with.

Pretty much a direct bolt in replacement, altho I understand the 261 install needs a little more tweeking than a 235 would.

The less you have to hassle with to get the exsisting tranny to bolt up to the new engine, the better, in my opinion.

The way the tranny and rear end are geared, putting a bigger motor like a 350 in there isn't going to do you any real good, you certianly wont get much more top speed with a 350 unless you replace the trans and rearend, too.. altho a 350 is a little more tolerant of winding out to 9 grand than a babbit pounder 235.

an idea is only stupid if you think about it rationally.
