i have a 1950 chevy, and the 2 speed rear differential looks like a timken, but according to this site (an old thread) the timken axle had bolted on axle shafts, and corporate axles had double splined shafts. mine has the splined outer shafts. but the pumpkin is very square, and has timken cast into the side. so what's up? anyone have a manual that shwos the different axles?

The wheel ends don't necessarily determine the third member. Here are parts diagrams. The C part numbers are Timken. The B part numbers are GM Corporate.

No.

From what I've seen corporate axles had vacuum shift vs electric 2spd shift on 0thers.

A Timken rear will not fit in a housing built for a Corporate rear, but Timken and Eaton both built housings for both and wheel ends could be specced. This GMC has
a vacuum shift Timken.

I was a licensed salvage dealer for many years. Trucks don't always have what came from the factory and two tons could be specced with various componants.
Sometimes you have to just take them apart and see what you have.

I don't think electric was ever offered with that Timken. But I think the Timken has a bolted together chamber that the diaphragm can be changed.

I doubt that they are available, but I could think one could be fashioned out of a brake diaphragm of the proper diameter.

We keep some of these around the shop to punch holes in rubber. They make a neat hole in a mud flap and would do the same in a diaphragm.
