If mounting a hydro boost on a firewall that is thicker due to mounting procedures, soundproofing, etc., double or long nuts used in supporting ceiling fixtures are common hardware items, even metric.

Turn down part way to give proper thread engagement, add a suitable washer and mount up.

Great idea. Some people call those long nuts coupling nuts.

Frank50,

Frank, thanks. While I am thinking about hydro boost units, they are attached by 16mm nuts, almost need a deep socket which I am sure no-one carries, and they have always been extremely tight. If one doesn’t insert the drive extension all the way into the socket, it will usually be deep enough to get the job done with a normal socket.

16MM is the same as 5/8". Use a 4" long 5/8 socket that's usually used over the long studs on a Jacobs engine brake installatiion on a Cummins diesel engine. Aren't those coupling nuts Grade 2? Is that alloy strong enough to be used to mount brake components?

Coupling nuts are available in Grade 5 and Grade 8, but you probably have to specify those to get them instead of the butter-soft ones.

Yes. I wouldn't use nuts or bolts from Home Depot to mount anything on a vehicle. Go to McMaster-Carr or a fastener supplier to get known high grade fasteners.
