I developed a slight leak at the pinion on my 1954 4100. Looking at the cross sectional view in the 1955 service manual it looks like I should be able to remove the drive flange and the bearing retainer and change the seal. Does this sound correct? Service manual only deals with changing pinion seal after disassembly of differential.

Thanks

I am not sure of your application, but if it is an open driveshaft, the answer is yes. The bearing retainer holds the seal, there is also a piece of felt (never have found replacements for the felt so don't mess it up) trapped between the flange and seal to catch the heavy debris. The original seal is fairly stout and will take considerable coercion to drive out. Make certain to use a sealant on the outside of the new seal where it mates to the flange.

Thanks Paul WNC - it is an open drive shaft. Everyone lists the seal as "rear seal" so I guess that is because the felt is "front seal"? I appreciate the heads up and will be careful.

If the seal is removed carefully, the felt "front seal" can be cleaned in the solvent of your choice and reused. Good luck!
