I installed a rebuilt 261 2 years ago and have since had an issue with the clutch . I used the same flywheel which I had machined flat , 11 in. clutch disk and pressure
plate off the original 235 which never had any issues . But since the transplant whenever I depress the clutch to its full extent it lack of a better term it chatters and rumbles , but only when totally depressed . I've replaced the throw out bearing twice and noticed that the tips of the fingers on the diaphragm are a bit warn as the paint is missing .
BUT upon checking the pilot bushing with a spare input shaft that's around 6 in. long the shaft will wobble side to side about 2 inches .
I then removed the pilot bushing and upon inspection it seems the center hole is oval . I have since replaced the bushing and the shaft is now tighter .
Could the pilot bushing have been the cause or should I look elsewhere ??? I'm guessing the bushing was not replaced when the engine was rebuilt .

A worn out pilot bushing can cause all sorts of problems...including the ones you mentioned. When the clutch is disengaged completely, the input shaft of the transmission can sort of wobble and "walk" around there and make a racket. Especially if your bushing has worn to an oval shape. And it is worse during a full moon.

Nothing good can come of a sloppy pilot bushing, but I haven't seen that happen. Maybe the clutch disc is getting cocked as the pedal is depressed, allowing the back side of the diaphragm fingers contact the spring hub.

I always figured it was because when the pressure plate was completely disengaged, the disc at that point being free moved and rattled around in there also and shook the input shaft around as it did. Nothing to hold the tip of the input shaft and some of them have a notable amount of play.

Well , finally got the tranny back in with a new pilot bushing , all else remained the same .
The noise seems to have gone , although I haven't taken in on the road yet .but I didn't have to leave the garage to notice the problem in the past .
Here's hoping .
