Finished constructing 22.5” wheels, 6” on front, ‘60’s GMC redrilled bolt pattern, rears 8.25” to replace duals with shop made center on new rims.

That looks good. 8.25 are everywhere, but I wonder about the 6" Maybe they are on bobtails. I haven't used bobtails in my business in over 40 years. I guess you had to go with 6" for the offset.

Ken,
The 6” ones came on ‘60’s trucks, never saw one actually on a truck, just scrounged around yards, got some slightly wider ones actually on a truck. Same body style as this one in picture.

looking at the pics, just wondering about the rim with the two hole patterns in it. Does it have the 5.25 pilot diameter? This could be critical because the factory nuts or holes in the wheels are not beveled. The center bore of the wheel is to be piloted on the diameter on the hub.

Correct, 5.25”, I made an adapter to go from there to the hub OD of 5.25”, using a factory ring with tapered nuts.

very nice! Where did you get the rims that you welded new centers into? I found one place online but their product was listed as "off road" only.

I was thinking about doing this same thing, my truck has the RH5 for 5 out of 6 wheels.

mdkelley -- I faced a similar situation about 10 years ago with my '65 GMC 4000 series truck, only all 6 of mine were RH-5s with the 6-lug pattern. With some patience, a tape measure and a LOT of walking through junk yards (plus some help from Grigg and the ODSS gang) I was able to come up with 7 single piece tubeless wheels. Look for trucks like the one in Ed's picture, older Ford U-Haul trucks and school buses/airport shuttle buses.

Mdkelley,

The place I got them from might have said that too, in the small print somewhere. I got them from Red Barn Customs in MI, but the packing label said Unverferth in Kalida, OH, who I suspect really made them.

Anyway, they are steel, proper thickness and strength, nice and round, etc.

Yeah, I drove my 46 around for several years with post 1953 wheels on the front with the 5.25" bore and a 4.75" pilot on the hub. They were on the truck when I got it. Got tires mounted on them and all. And I Never noticed it until I swapped wheels from the front to the back. Then I made some rings at work and pressed them in the wheels to pilot on the rear hub. Lucky I never had a problem! I FINALLY got retired, you guys probably noticed I've got more time on my hands.

Unverferth is a long time agricultural equipment manufacturer that also makes wheels. Interesting read. If their wheels will hold up some of the stuff the make them for, they'll probably do fine for your Big Bolt.

I called many salvage yards around here, even a big truck yard. No one seems to have those older trucks around anymore. A lot of junkyards scrapped EVERYTHING back when the price of scrap was way up about 10 years ago. It was pretty crazy to see huge empty sandlots where used to be 20-40 acres of vehicles previously. There have to be some around somewhere though I imagine, I may just have to expand my search to different states maybe.

Calling gets you no where...you need to put the boots on the ground and walk the truck yards...the guy on the phone won't know about the rims piled in the back of a truck body that's been pushed in the corner for decades.

If you have private school bus contractors you might try them as well...sometimes they have a rim pile out back...

So true: I was looking for 7.50-20s tires in a large junk yard several years ago. They said they didn't have any, as I walked thru the building there sat a like new set of BF Goodrich 7.50-20s mounted on widow maker rims. Just had to find some that knew how to dismount them.
