I am probably within 6 weeks of pulling my motor and trans. I am going to figure out a makeshift stand so I can run and iron out all issues.

I have no known leaks, but the whole engine is coated with a thick layer of crud.

I am planning on the following:

I know I have to go through carb again because it won't run without considerable throttle and it acts super lean.
Water pump. Preventative
Plugs and wires. They look original
Cap/rotor. Have not opened cap to see if it has been converted to electronic ignition.
Pan and valve cover gaskets
I really want to buy a FI system for it. See how the budget is going. Any suggestions?
Clean and paint to original colors.

Put all back together and get it running well before reinstallation.

What else do I do to this thing while it is out?

"My motor" leaves a lot to the imagination. How about letting us in on the year, number of cylinders, and displacement? "Things to do" are pretty variable according to whether we're dealing with a spray oiler 216, a later model 235, or maybe a small block V8.

If the clutch hasn't been replaced lately, this is the best opportunity to do so.

I would iron those things out without removing your engine . The engine is already sitting on a engine stand .

Of course, and as you may know, that the thick layer of crud may very well be keeping the leaks at bay, lol.

Ferris While you have the head off,if you do, be sure to work on the crud buildup in the water jacket back by the block drain. Screwdriver and a hammer,if 261 look at vent holes on siamese cylinders.

I will keep quiet on the motor bits. Get at the brake line that goes from the block and crosses the frame on the crossmember. Easiest time to get at that line, presuming has never been changed.

Along while doing clutch, throw out bearing, check pilot bearing.

It's a 66 283V8. 4spd with granny I assume. 60K miles. Looks to be completely unmolested.

I hope not to be pulling heads, but I may just because.
Clutch is a definite. And associated bearings. Great idea.
All brake lines are being replaced. I have them, just not installed yet.
I hear ya on running it in the truck, but I want to get going on front end stuff and do motor stuff as time permits. Plus that angle if leaning over kills my back. Be so much better for me to be standing next to it.

Some people have several projects which aren't necessarily included in their sig line. For instance, few of the current stovebolters remember that I was gifted a 1960 American LaFrance pumper truck with a 401 V6 in it about 15 years ago. Right now, I'm working on three 216, 235, and 261 projects in various stages of completion!

Yes. I am fearful of that. I am going to assume the worst, but hope for the best. Clean it all off, get it running right, and look for leaks.

I do HRL on karaoke myself- - - -but it takes a drink or three to get me in the mood. I like the original Charlie Ryan version better- - - -Commander Cody gets more air play, but it's a cover. Charlie actually built the car- - -a Model A coupe with a Lincoln V12 engine. When I showed up on Stovebolt with a Ford-related handle almost 20 years ago, it ruffled a few feathers. Some things never change- - - -I still poke the bear and get a few folks' lacy manties in a wad on a regular basis. Allegedly grown men getting passionate about a bunch of rust molecules holding hands can be pretty amusing at times!

The wife and I went to see "Asleep At The Wheel" a few years ago, they do a nice job on Hot Rod Lincoln. They performed at an acoustic venue in Ann Arbor and couldn't be in town without playing Commander Cody! We've also seen Ricky Scaggs there along with a number of other a great bluegrass artists. Allison Krouse played there before she was a major artist.

I am building a list of things now. Will see how tings look in a coupl emonths.

You will have the perfect time to paint firewall and engine bay it the engine is out.
