There are a few different opinions on that around here. My preference is for the Speedway Motors 12 circuit.

It is good quality for a reasonable price.

I’m about to buy a harness also. I called Speedway Motors and asked the tech which harness he recommended. He said to buy the 22-circuit harness which is on sale and only about $18 more than the 12-circuit. He said he likes the fuse block better also. It’s overkill, but for basically the same money you’re getting a lot more bang for your buck. I’ll zip tie the unused circuits up under the dash some way. I’m buying it this week.

Alainfrenchie54 A friend recently asked me to help on a 55 chevy complete harness, wow nightmare,I am a fan of keep the original if you can. Now I know they can get butchered-up,dry,burned and corroded so you have to work for what is best !!

I’m rethinking my decision to buy the Speedway 22 circuit harness. I’m never going to need the many additional circuits and will have to have the shop zip tie the excess and tuck them out of sight under the dash. I think the basic 12 circuit harness will work just fine for me. I *do* want to make two changes though᠁᠁. I want to convert the tail lights to LED and know I’ll need a flasher to make them work properly (2-pin or 3-pin?). The Speedway fuse block does not have one, nor does it have a blank space to add one. I see two flashers installed in the harness but don’t know what they’re for?? Where would I attach a flasher for the LED tail lights? For comparison I’ve attached a pic of a “Gearhead” brand harness with flashers in the fuse block. I’d also like to add a USB port so I can charge my phone.

As you can tell I know nothing about electrical. Learned how to work on everything except wiring. Guess it always intimidated me. Thanks

If you look at the zoomed out picture of the speedway 12 circuit harness, you can see where the flashers are:

https://www.speedwaymotors.com/12-Circuit-Mini-Fuse-Universal-Hot-Rod-Wiring-Harness-Kit,2352.html

Instead of being part of the fuse block itself, they are on remote wires so you can mount them someplace more convenient.

As far as a USB port, I would strongly recommend putting in a cigarrete lighter and using usb chargers that plug into that. I did the integrated USB port back when all phone chargers did was supply 5VDC to the +/- pins in the port. Those quickly became obsolete as more and more of the charge circutry moved from the phone to the charger. Now that USB C is becoming the norm, they are even worse.

With a cigarrete lighter port, you can just pop in whatever the current charging technology is and go.

Thanks Fibonachu. I’ve read I’ll need a “no-load” flasher to make the LEDs work. Are the two flashers in the Speedway and Gearhead harness of that type or are they for something else?

Will I need to buy a 2, 3, or 5-pin flasher? With or without a grounding wire?

Thanks

The two flashers are one for turn signals and separate flasher for hazards. I doubt the ones that come with it are for led lights.

You can get LED compatible flasher modules in 2, 3, or 5 pin form factors. I *think* the Speedway is a 2-pin, but I am not 100% sure.

You want to look for an electronic flasher module, and double check the description because the greatest majority rhat are LED compatible explicitly call that out.

Speedway recommends a heavy duty electronic alternating LED flasher, 12V. I’ll confirm Monday if the pin count is compatible with their 12-circuit harness.

You know how when you’re on the ‘net shopping for something, then the next day you’re inundated with offers from lots of other companies selling the same thing?? Well, that’s what happened to me after shopping for a 12-circuit wiring harness from Speedway. A-Team by Southwest Performance Parts caught my attention with their version and at a really nice price at $109.99 vs $185.99 (on sale). 100% satisfied guarantee, premium quality guarantee, and free shipping.

“All wires are labeled every 12 inches so installation is simple. In addition, the labeling every 5 inches makes check circuits EASY. These kits are Universal and come with detailed instructions and have specific pages for GM, Ford and Mopar installations To make installation even easier, the wires are GM color coded!!
This A-Team Performance wiring kit includes fuses for turn signal, Headlight, ACC, Radio, Brake, Fan, Wiper, Hazard, Gauges, AC/Heat, Coil & Horn.
It also Includes Horn Relay and Connector, Turn and Hazard Signals, Dimmer Switch Connector, Circuit Breaker for Headlights, 2 Flashers, 1 Alternator Plug, 2 Ignition Switch Connectors Plus more”

Anyone bought this or any of their other harnesses?

Thanks

All harnesses have the same or better features you mention. All are labeled along the length. This company's posted addresses are a small strip shop rental space. The kind you see with each "company" having one roll up door in rear and a reception area in front. In Surprise AZ. They also have an address on the 17th floor of a high rise in Boston MA. I believe they are a drop shipper with no inventory at all. This harness is sold by many fly by night'ers, including on Ebay with free shipping for $79 and a MAKE OFFER! on top of that. That harness is all over the internet. That company has 31 reviews on BBB, all BAD. Forget all that Quality and Guarantee stuff. It is all BS.

Stick with the more well known harnesses. Buy one like in this link and put us both at ease. I'll be glad to help wire it.
Click

Speedway has a huge warehouse here in Phoenix. The kind you can walk in a pick up the stuff. A one family business since 1952.

I think you can see the difference in trust and etc.

Our favorite old truck vendors sell harnesses also. They are in the "original" category rather than the universal category. The universal is plenty adequate for me, albeit you need to do length cutting and crimping. The original harnesses don't come with a prewired modern fuse panel. This is a must for me and I highly recommend. The price difference is VERY LARGE.

If you have an existing old rats nest harness, save all of it and anything associated with it. Save all switches, clips, clamps, connectors, grommets, boots and etc.
