I’m wondering if a tail housing and u joint yoke from a open drive shaft 420 will fit on a older 420 with the torque tube drive shaft. I am thinking of up grading my drive shaft to a new one, and the drive shaft shop can build me a new open shaft if I can change my tail housing to the open type. My trany is in excellent condition, just a older torque tube type.
I believe it will. I was involved recently in converting an open driveline 420 to a torque tube, and all that was needed to go that way was the rear bearing retainer and a different U joint. How long will the new driveshaft be? Some shops don't like to build single shafts that are beyond certain lengths. If yours has a center carrier bearing already, that probably won't be a concern as long as the shaft angles are correct. Jerry

Yes as Jerry said .the rear bearing cover is the same bolt on pattern as the rear ball tube type has. You also have to change the u joint holder that goes on the spline as it has the smooth outside we’re the seal runs through the newer cover and be sure you use the matching speedometer gears.
My truck has the carrier bearing at the back of the cab. From there to the rear end is open u joint drive shaft. I will retain that set up. Thanks Jerry and Kevinski for you answers.
