I saw a picture of a cylinder that was ruined beyond repair from mouse urine running down the walls for many years.
Cat pee is pretty corrosive too. I had to deal with that when restoring my Model A. It would rust overnight with just primer coats on the body panels.

Where are these grommets of which you speak? Are they on the opposite side from the cotter pins, referencing the shift box picture a few posts down?
