Hi, I picked up a 51 Chevy 1\2ton was looking to decode engine. PO said it was a 283 from a 1957 Chevrolet car. I looked up codes on some of the sites but no luck. FOI24D is stamped on the pass side ledge below the head any help would be great. Thanks
That's not a standard engine serial number. To date it you'll probably need to go to the block casting number on the right front lower part of the block.

F = Flint Engine Plant 01 = Month (Jan) 24 = Day D = 283 with Powerglide from a passenger car 1958 and up.
There was no "D" engine code in 1957 and the "D" code used 1956 was the 265, but it would have a long serial number in front of your engine code. Your engine should have motor mount bolt bosses cast on the side (1958 was the first year for them).
The date code cast into the block will be on the top of the bellhousing flange.

LUGNUTZ Have a book like a peterson publication that helps in identifying that stuff. A friend gave me a 283 block that matched up for my 1960 Corvette,he said it had been an injected one,had a 3735236 shaft that had a factory looking drilled snout. Might have been careful work at home,only drilled one (283) Iv'e seen. His neighbor who is 91 gave me a booklet on how to work on that injection. So better lay off not truck !!

If you are commenting about my engine, I am not sure what you’re trying to tell me. My research shows me that my engine is a 283. It has a 3 inch stroke. That’s all I know about my engine.
