I was thinking about swapping out the rear end of our 1950 3600 ton with a later model 4.10. I found a non posi unit for $400 which seems high. It's off a 67 3/4 ton. The article on stove bolt says 68 through 72 would work. Will a 67 also work?

Can anybody give me advice on whether I should wait for the posi? Is this price too high for the non posi unit?

And I guess lastly how much of an increase in speed would I get from going from a 456 to a 410

At 3000 rpm with 32"tires you will gain about 7 mph or about a 10% increase.

With the wheels off the ground, lift the wheel or axle flange by hand to feel for any up and down play. If you feel any, it will need new bearings and seals, and maybe axle shafts if the bearing of that model run directly on the axle shaft.
Rotate a wheel back and forth to feel for excess backlash in the ring and pinion. There should be some play, but not a huge amount.
If you detect problems, you need to cut his price in half to cover repairs.

Thank you 52Carl,. It's supposedly in a low mileage 67. The problem is it is too far to drive to check it out and then come back after he has it removed. I'd be taking his word for it being good

You could explain that you don’t want to make two trips and if he wants the sale, he’ll remove it prior to your trip or remove it while you get lunch or a cup of coffee after you have checked it out.

It doesn't need to be removed for you to check it once you get there. It just needs to be jacked up so you can manipulate the wheel to feel for slop. Once you have checked it, then you can make an appropriate offer based on your findings.

The center section is all you will need to change to put the 4.10 rear end in the 50 3600. I am not to sure the complete housing will be a direct fit. The 4:10 rear end for these are very hard to find. They only came on models with v-8 engines & auto trans. The price is a bit steep but you could hunt for a long time to find one.
I will send you a PM.
George
