Today I headed to the gas station to fill up the "new" truck. I was spliting gears just checking things out when a problem seemed to occur.

I was in 4th high and started up an incline. I hit the button to take the rear to low, let off the gas press the clutch and got a kind of grinding gear sound from the rear.

I was able to pull it back in to high and got to high 3rd. Upon checking it out, I have no problem split shifting all the way up until going from high 3rd to low 4th or from high 4th to low 4th.

Am I doing something wrong?

When down shifting the two speed, you have to rev the engine to get the rpm higher. you most likely need to get some more time in driving a 2 speed to get the feel for it.

So I'm guessing you bought the truck.

Yes you gotta play with the rpm's. There is nothing more gratifying than carrying a heavy load and using a bunch of gears even before you finish going through the intersection. I rarely use first in high or low. I start off in two low and then go two high, three low etc etc. Man, I wanna go for a drive now.

I agree...more practice is in order. Then when you get real good you won't even use the clutch when shifting, you'll just hear and feel that SWEET spot when shifting.

I shift both of my trucks from 2 gear to high gear while in low range then shift up to Hi, kind of like having Over-Drive.

Ditto on not using thr clutch, at least on a downshift from high to low axle in the same gear. Is yours a vacuum shift, or electric? Vaccum units shift smoother, IMHO. Just push the button to low range with power applied, let the shift spring wind up and "cock" the shifter, then quickly get off the gas, and back on. It should drop right in to the lower gear. On a double shift, like low 3rd to high 2nd., move the splitter first, then make the tranny shift and double-clutch a little as you move the shifter. It'll drop right in there with a little practice. Then, when you're feeling really skillful, climb into a Mack with a Tri-Plex box, and try two shifters at a time!

This is a vacuum shift. I need to get out and try it again.

Well, I went out and drove again and NO problem. It worked quite well.
