Well I guess a muffler isn't good forever!

While fiddling with the brakes on my '46 2 ton, I noticed the muffler is pretty badly rotted out.. looks more like a "cross section" of a muffler than it does a whole muffler.

So i'm wondering what you folks would reccomend for a muffler behind a 235?

It's not all that loud.. in fact, it dosen't seem loud at all.. but figured while I was under there it wouldn't hurt to put a new muffler on there.. just need to know what contemporary part would be closest to the original?

Fumblin46!

My 2 ton has a fairly new muffler on it so I'll have a look to see if there are identifying marks that I can pass on to you. The truck is still 'in the barn' but hope to retrieve it tomorrow. As soon as it's home I'll post again. In the meantime someone else may have some good knowledge.

Cheers, George

Jarge,
I think that you should go into to the barn, start her up and just push everything else out of the way! That way they would have respect for a stovebolt!

Fred!

You're absolutely right! Can't show no disrespect for a 'Stovebolt'!!! "Boats and junk---out of the way".

skiffman's right! I was looking at those during the winter and couldn't see why they wouldn't be satisfactory. Might give it a 'throaty' tone.

I spoke too soon about getting my truck out of winter storage! The guy on the farm is away for the weekend at a funeral and no one can open the barn, so the housekeeper says. Dang! I was looking forward to the weekend.

cheers, George.

In the shop where I worked at that time the mufflers they replaced on Big bolts was round and about 3 feet long. There is a special bracket on the side of the frame with a strap to hold the muffler in place. I'd like to find one for my 54 6100 but it hasn't been a high priority. Jim

Why not just go with a glasspack from the local parts store? I've run the same set of mufflers on 3 different trucks;they just keep sounding better as time goes on.

A big, long glasspack with a turndown tip. Nice tone, sounds cool on a big bolt!

Go to Muffler shop, get one of those 6" or so diameter and 24 to 30" long round mufflers for Pherds! I have them make a little down turn about a foot long too, to keep reverb outta cab. Those straps for mufflers can be had at Chevs of the 40's for one of nicer ones. If you have the D ring to tighten, just use pipe strap for the new muff and bend like orig. OR, go all out and use a universal hanger somewhere else, like on end of tail pipe up to frame somewhere. Glasspacks are too loud. IMHO!

I dont notice the truck being all that loud the way it is, and considered just removing whats left of the muffler and putting some straight pipe in there.. but wanted to get some opinions.

Since my goal is to put the truck back to as close to original as my budget will allow, i'm leaning twards the tractor muffler option.

Last time I put glass packs on anything was years ago when my buddies and I would anxiously rip them out of the box and drop them on the garage floor several times before installing them.. those were the days!
