I need to find out if I have a 216 or 235 in my 48 4100. The guy I bought it from says it is a 216. I have been to the tech tips page and inliners web site and found the first three letters match with a 235 but the ending #'s are no where to be found. I see the #'s starting with 8..... but mine starts with 6.....
It looks as if my engine was replaced shortyly after it was new since the delivery card # is FEA679947 and the engine in it is FEA678586.

I am just about to order parts and would like to find out so I don't order the wrong ones.

The only important part of the engine serial number, regarding engine identification, is the three letter prefix. The rest of the serial number is just the build sequence number.

In your case, FEA is a prefix for the 235 used in the 6000 series trucks. The standard engine for the 4000 series trucks was the 216, but the 235 was available as an option (RPO 225). However, I believe the 235 option in the 4000 series should have an A preceding the prefix (AFEA).

Check the link that Baldeagle gave just in case somebody screwed up the serial numbers. You can also look for the block casting number for further verification.

My '48 Loadmaster has a 235 (FEA prefix) just remember these are the "earlier" or "big truck" 235's meaning they are low-pressure oilers with babbit bearings. The have the same tall pushrod cover as a 216 and look pretty much identical. Just something to keep in mind when ordering 235 parts, get the right year.
