Hello,

Does anybody have any experience in disassembling a windshield from a 1940 Chevy 1/2 ton Pickup?

I have it off the car and I am trying to separate the two parts. Any help is welcome.

Hey Mike,

I think the '40 is like my '46, so I'll tell you how the '46 works and hopefully that helps.

The frame is two "C" shaped pieces joined by pieces of flat bar stock that are bent to make the angle. At the top and bottom of the inside of the frame are 8 flat head screws that attach the frame halves to the bar stock, 2 on each half top and bottom. Depending on if your saving the frame and glass or not will determine how you attack the problem and how extensive a vocabulary will be needed.

I have the screws out and glass “broken” removed.

Separating seems to be the problem......

Why can't rust take a day off some time?

Heat and penetrating oil and wiggle and pull.

My frame was rusted thru in quite a few places so I was replacing it, all I needed to save was the connectors. A hammer and cold chisel made a quick job of separating the pieces with the frame held in a vise. A new frame was $450 3 years ago so the condition of what you have and your budget may warrant a more judicious approach.

I ended up scrapping the rusted frame on mine. Just too much damage to mess with.
Glass was shot as well. Had an auto glass outfit install new glass, with polyurethane sealant. looks and works great
As to the rubber gasket that seals the frame to the cab, I started with one from Jim Carter rubber was so hard it was impossible to install into the grooves. Ended up with Steeles Rubber - slipped in easy and very flexible. Highly recommend
