So while swapping out valve springs on my GMC 228, I noticed the new ones had an extra half turn or so, and look a bit different when compared to the old ones when on the valves. These are the same springs that Egge sells for this type of engine specifically. Part number 160-1126 made by SB international I believe. Does this look concerning to anyone on here? The new one is on the right, old on the left.

Yep. Looks concerning to me. I would be looking for some factory design specs to verify which of those two is proper.

Thanks, I'll get to that hopefully here soon. Here's where I am so far. I found the old exhaust springs are different than the intakes (exhaust is on right in photo, intake on left), as well retainer caps. The new intake valve spring looks decent with it's different retainer setup , unlike the exhaust which looks too compressed (both new springs installed now on that cylinder). Thoughts?
This engine gets more interesting every time I tear into it.

Agree the new one’s are not right.

I would test the old one’s..........might actually be no need to replace.

The exhaust valves in your pics appear to have rotator type retainers. I don't believe that is a stock setup.

Thanks for the replies. I ended up putting the old ones back since, as 68ironhead said, they had the rotator caps on them. I don't have time just yet to mix and max different spring heights to make sure they're the same exact weight and all that. Runs fine still on the old ones! At least I got the oil seals replaced while I was in there though.
Thanks again!

302’s came with valve rotators, perhaps not all, just ones I have seen.

Spring tension in lbs. per inch deflection factors
Higher tension:
thicker wire
steeper pitch (fewer coils per inch)
smaller ID
