For what it might be worth! I had my 46 painted with the 'newest' type of paint, then clear coated.
The painter matched the original colour and it was great. He claims it can sit outside for the next 20 years and not fade etc.
I don't think you'd hurt the 'originality' of the truck as long as you can match the colour.
Just my idea of course.

When the water tank was removed the truck, the frame wasn't rusted and was in surprisingly great shape. I'll get some pictures next week and share those too!
I'm starting to get excited about the project and it looks like we are going to have a nice experience in the future when we get it finished. Thanks for the help.

It's a polyurethane enamel that has the "wet" look for years after it's applied. It won't fade like the original-equipment paint that was applied to the truck when it was new, and it will only require an occasional wash job to keep it loking new. Waxing won't be necessary at all. When Imron was a new product about 30 years ago, it was applied to crop-duster airplanes that couldn't keep paint on them due to the chemical spray. It worked great until it was time to remove the paint for periodic inspection, and none of the normal paint strippers could touch it. It had to be SANDED off, until DuPont could develop a stripper that could take it off!
