I installed a new vacuum advance on my 54 235 truck engine .Prior to removing dist, made reference marks as to position of rotor, postion of dist itself, and postion of dist body when i removed the old vacuum advance. The problem that I have is installing the dist. It will drop down so far,but not flush with the block. The rotor feels tight and lines up pretty close as to where it was when removed. Did I do something wrong,or maybe the wrong vacuum advance? Any and all advise is welcome. Thank you

You need to use a long flat blade screwdriver to line the oil pump up.

As you drop the distributor, the oil pump tang (and rotor) will turn as the distributor drive gear meshes with the cam shaft gear. You will have to turn the rotor slightly to compensate or the tang will not engage in the oil pump, preventing it from dropping fully.

What I do, in addition to marking the distributor as you did, is to place one additional mark (rotor to distributor) as your pulling out the distributor, just after the drive gear clears the cam gear, so you know where to set the rotor (how much compensation) so tang engages the oil pump.
