I am painting my rebuilt 235 back to its original color and was wondering if the waterpump was painted gray or was it black? Also wondering if the manifolds were left unpainted? I also wanted to know if the valve cover was originally black as well. When I bought the 53 truck its motor was painted all black and the guy told me that thats how it came from the factory, but I had never heard of this before. I had always thought they were either blue or gray.

por-15 sells a nice "cast iron" looking paint for high termperatures. That way you avoid the rusty look...best to sandblast before applying.

Probably lots of different opinions on these things, I say water pumps were painted gray. The fan was black. I believe the manifolds were also gray originally, but the exhaust manifold heat would take the paint off quickly, so most people seem to paint the intake manifold gray and the exhaust manifold cast iron gray, using high temperature paint. Valve covers were gray also. I cannot explain the black remark, lots of things change over the years. That gray paint originally used on the engines, IMHO, was poor paint, and came off easily, probably got repainted a long time ago?
