Hey guys...my 336 is at the engine rebuilders and they’ve deconstructed the engine. They said everything is good but asked me if I had a supplier for valvetrain items. Specifically, valves and springs. They told me they could have everything made but I’m sure that’s going to cost me some $$$$$. If anyone knows a supplier I’d appreciate the info. Of course it would be great if valves where more compatible with today’s gas. Otherwise I’ll be using fuel from local airport. Engines going in my 1958 GMC 3/4 ton Napco. I’ll post pics as I’m getting closer to completion. I’ve kept it super original and as close to stock as possible.
If you can find valves with the same stem diameter that are slightly oversized in head diameter and/or stem length, any good machinist can cut them down to fit. Just don't use an intake valve in an exhaust port- - - -the alloy probably won't handle the heat load for very long. I believe the intakes for those engines used 30 degree seats, but a 45 degree valve can be reground to 30 without much of a problem. Jerry

Have cut down 390 Ford valves to fit old Harley motorcycle engine. Shortened the stem and cut new keeper groove. As stated, if the stem diameter is correct the rest can be machined to fit.
Ames Performance is THE supplier for Pontiac parts.
Egge Machine used to have several acres??? of engine parts, but have not spoke with them for many years.

The "unleaded fuel ruins valves" story is something I call an "Old Mechanics' Tale"- - - - -sort of like an "Old Wives' Tale". The idea has been debunked decades ago. At any rate, the damage was supposedly to the valve seats, not the valves themselves. There's no telling how many dollars have been spent unnecessarily on hard valve seats and labor to install then, or how many engine that have been ruined by an improperly installed valve seat that comes adrift while an engine is running. If you're planning to run LP gas or compressed natural gas, go ahead and get Stellite seats installed (only on the exhausts), but for gasoline, leaded, unleaded, or alcohol-enhanced, it's not required. "Deathanol" is rough on carburetors- - - -not valves! Jerry
