The Stovebolt Site Forums The Shop Area Paint and Body Shop Paint over undercoat?

I have a ‘47 AD 3100 that finally is nearing the finish line. It was to be “finished” in September but it’s a long story. Everything is painted except for the hood. The exterior is a no brained. It’s the inside that I need some advice. I’m sure someone has dealt with this over the years.
The inside of the hood (underside) was sprayed with sound deadener/undercoating. I do not intend to wash/scrape this coating off. I’d like to simply paint over the undercoating with single stage enamel to make it Mariner Blue. I’m questioning the adhesion of the paint to undercoating considering the engine heat generated.
Certainly an option would be to add more undercoating to cover any overspray after the paint is dry.
Just trying to work smarter not harder.
Any experiences, opinions are greatly appreciated.

I think paint over undercoating would eventually peel off. Originally the underside of the hood was not painted. Mine is black primer with some Omaha Orange overspray.
But if you want to paint the underside of the hood that's OK too. I would pressure wash it to get loose stuff off and then shoot a coat of some sort of primer before your topcoat. Dust and/or grease will definitely need to be removed. I don't think underhood heat will necessarily be a problem.
It may last long enough for your needs, but expect the paint to come off in spots.
If you're just trying to pretty it up a bit and don't need the body color, I'd just shoot a good quality undercoating over what's already there. It's rubberized and will probably stick better than paint.

You can get Truck bed liner in colors. The blue might be close enough to blend in with Mariner Blue.
