hello i just joined im live in virginia beach i have a 1950 GMC and recently a 1950 Chevy 3600. My GMC will get airbags and an LS motor the rest will be stock looking. The Chevy runs right now with the original 216 motor, i have replaced to radiator with an aluminum one. and trying to put disc brakes on the truck.
I ordered a rear disc set from lugnut 4x4. the front is up in the air at this moment. i checked with TSM but they lost me on the rear setup when there was a $164 shipping charge lugnut was free shipping. the Chevy will most likely have a wood flat bed and be a dually. After adjusting the column [censored] we did take the truck for a drive. (not brakes or seat) i did just pick up a back seat from a GMC Envoy that i plan to install. looking around the Chevy truck didn't have any turn signals from looking around im not seeing much for turn signals either. right now the Chevy is a 6V system. in the future i will change it over but for now im getting thing done to drive the truck then move back to building the GMC i have a suspension setup being made by RRC Fabrications out of California.

Has anyone been able to convert a 8 lug 3/4 ton to all disc. when i got this truck the rear drums were gone and the master cylinder was also missing. looking at the cost to repair the drum system it only made since to just go disc all the way around.

Welcome to Stovebolt.com, pick a name

We have at least one member near you in VIrginia Beach, VA.

I live in NE NC in Jarvisburg (about 60 miles south of Chesapeake). I keep my trucks in stock/original-type equipment, but your choice for your trucks it truly your choice.

Each time you post a question, be sure to state the make, year, model truck.

Also, post one question in each thread (as you did above) - to keep us from getting confused.

Regarding your question about disc brakes in your 3/4 ton (8 lug) 1950 Chevrolet, I have had no experience with that style brakes. Other members will most likely offer suggestions, soon.

Depending on your ability to fabricate caliper mounts, the simplest solution would be to find a donor truck with 8 lug hubs and scavenge the entire brake system, rotors, calipers, master cylinder, and maybe even brake lines and proportioning valve, etc. and adapt them to the truck you're working with. Trying to mix and match components from different sources can get frustrating, expensive, and deadly DANGEROUS. Let some manufacturer's engineering department do the R&D and steal their ideas! Fortunately, virtually all 3/4 and 1 ton trucks use the same 8 lug bolt pattern for the wheels, drums, and rotors, so don't limit your parts search to GM vehicles. It's entirely possible a system from a Ford or MOPAR might be a better fit. Once the disc is mounted to the hub with a few lug nuts, use air pressure to hold the caliper in place and fabricate a mounting bracket from appropriate-thickness steel plate to connect the calipers to the rear axle tubes. If you have some skill with a plasma cutter and a welder, that shouldn't be a particularly difficult task. Be sure to account for the side to side movement a caliper needs to make in order to compensate for pad wear when choosimg a wheel with the right clearance for the caliper.

I found a kit for a 55-59 3600 from ebay. i had to drill out the top 2 holes from 7/16 to 1/2. then took the flapper wheel on my grinder to the bracket where it just touching a small bit. the calipers on this kit came from a 86 k20 and the rotors are from a 91 suburban. bad part is the stock wheel touches the calipers. but i was replacing them anyway the had a ring around the mounting edge. i also tried a newer 8 lug rim about 2008 these rims put most of the tire in and these hit the tie rods. im thinking spacer but i will have to change the studs out because they will be to short.
