About a year ago I bought this truck at a little farm retirement auction. It was painted a horrendous purple color but the body was rust free, the price was right and it reminded of my grandpa's 1948 gmc 3/4 ton wrecker that I rode in a lot as a kid, learned to drive a manual transmission in and then drove some when I was a teenager. The auction was near my house so I drove it home, the battery didn't charge and the engine wouldn't idle but we made it. A carb rebuild and new plugs had it running smooth. The first winter was spent working with my 4 and 6 year old boys removing old paint and fixing some minor dents and then painting it. Then I rebuild the bed with sides as I might use the truck in my contracting business. The next step.was all new glass, weatherstripping and replacing worn out door latches and handles. It's pretty cool how many parts are readily available for these trucks. Currently I'm working on figuring out where to find a new PTO gear, then freshen up the brakes, getting the turn signal working and hopefully that's all. Either way it has been a fun project with my kids helping all along. I will try and attach a good picture of the truck as it is now
Thanks 3B, I had a lot of fun being with my grandpa in his shop when I was a kid. I didn't follow him into mechanics as a trade but I still enjoy fixing my own vehicles when possible and I hope my boys will learn a few skills and have lots of good memories too!
