Hi,
Just curious if anyone has a bigger truck with the parking brake on back of SM465 tranny which is LEVER OPERATED FROM THE FLOOR (via a transmission mounted lever) vs a dash mounted cable like I keep seeing.

I know the SM420 had a trans mount floor lever but have yet to find a 465 like that.
If you have a floor lever on a SM465, or maybe converted one yourself a picture would be appreciated.
A really good picture of a clean SM420 setup would help too.

Thanks
Pete

I haven't definitively ID'd my tranny, but pretty sure it's a 420. Are you looking for pic of floor lever mounting or the brake mounting? I've got clear ones of both, but my brakes back further mounted on back of the pump. Let me know and I'll get em up, or to ya.

I have SM420's on the floor with both types of brakes. The 1/2 to 1-1/2 ton used an external band and the 2-ton and up used the dual shoe type with internal and external shoes.

52vff, your fire truck parking brake is on the back of the pump transfer case and could be made by any number of manufactures. My '57 has International Harvester parking brake parts, not GM.

I can't help with the SM465...

Mike,
I could use a nice close up of where the P.B. lever mounts to trans and the plate with the ratchet teeth bottom of lever engages to.

That's all really.

My plan is to use the original cable from back of parking brake, then connect a rod to the clevis that connects to lever.
As long as I can solidly mount everything it should work fine.

Thanks for help.

Mike B, yes I didn't even try to match it to GM parts, just got them relined. It is the dual shoe type you mentioned.
Pete, I don't have a great picture of that mount on mine but I'll let you know when I get them uploaded.

64 Pete, were you able to get your brake set up? I am new to this site and trying to do the same thing as you. I have a 59 Chevy 3100 and I am trying to utilize a hand brake. Like you, I want to attach to the side of my 465 trans. I have tried unsuccessfully to open the pictures Mike B. was willing to share with you. I searched all the pictures and would greatly appreciate it if you could send me some pictures of how you were able to mount the brake lever. I too plan to use the original original cable from back of parking brake, then connect a rod to the clevis that connects to lever. any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

Mike, I am new to this site and was very excited to see this forum regarding how to mount a hand brake to a 465 trans. I am currently building a 59 Chevy 3100 and would love to see the pictures you were kind enough to share. I have tried unsuccessfully to open the pictures at the site you posted and even searched through all the pictures hoping it was hidden somewhere. Could I please trouble you for those pictures?

Mike this is the site with the pictures you posted regarding the hand brake assembly. Once again if I could get my hands on the pictures it would be greatly appreciated.

This thread is several years old. Since that time Photobucket took a dump and no longer works. Perhaps Mike will jump in here with updated info.

Mont111,

For some reason those pictures are gone from this site and I can't remember which pictures I posted.

I've never owned a SM465, so I won't be any help on where to find or how to hook up a parking brake lever on your transmission. Hopefully 64Pete will pop in and see this thread...he hasn't been here for a few months.

Is there a reason you don't want to use the stock parking brake set-up?

Mike B,
Hi,
I may have saved the pics.
You had posted pics of a transmission and parking brake or PB linkage I'm thinking.
What vehicle might have this been?
I can see if I can find them in my computer.

Thanks

Pete,

Any pictures I posted would have been for a SM420...not sure if the PB linkage is the same as the SM465. More than likely it was a picture of a trans sitting on the floor.

Mike, thanks for the quick response. I appreciate it. I realize this is an older forum, but thought it would be worth a shot. I have looked all over the internet for a picture showing how it is, or could be mounted on a SM465. The 59 I bought is mounted of a K5 chassis.

The emergency brake wasn't well thought out, and slapped together. I came across this old hand brake, and just love the cool factor of it. I love how guys like to restore their vehicles back to original but, regarding my truck build, I'm not a restoration purist.

Beside's, I figured my truck could use, in addition to the manual transmission, an extra Millennial Anti-theft Device.

this is what i have for an emergency brake. It was pretty rusted up and needed some straightening, but I was able to get it taken care of.

This was the stuff I used to get rid of the rust. I love it, If you guys know of any better or cheaper I would love to hear about it.

Mike B,
I found these two pictures. ( Hope the link shows)
Maybe the ones we were thinking of.

My interest in this was to see what the SM420 set up looked like so I can adapt it to the SM465.
The SM465 trans I have uses a cable pulled drum brake on rear of transmission to act as a prop shaft parking brake.
The donor step van had a hand lever like I've seen on fork trucks. nono
Floor lever would be much better! cool

Yes, those are my pictures...that trans is still sitting on the floor almost in the exact same spot...lol!

Mont or Pete, can one of you post a good passenger side picture of the SM465? Is there a pin sticking out of the top cover? The Sector (crescent piece with the locking teeth in it is the same per my parts book from 1955-69, so the SM420 lever might bolt right up.

Mike,
I think you mean the big pin that the lever pivots on?
Not there on my 465.
I have to make a plate to mount the 420 parts, and a clevis to use as an adapter to connect the cable from the drum brake to the linkage from the lever.

The pivot pin is not there on all SM420 top plates either. If the SM420 came out of a smaller truck, the pin is not there and the hole is not there to press the pin into. I have drilled a hole for that pin on a couple of top plates. I am not sure about the SM465 if the boss for that pin is there or not. (I don't have any SM465s laying around).

Hi,
I took a few photos.
The right side of the 465, the brake, and the cable that goes into the parking brake.
Pretty sure everything is in the drum brake assembly as usual on a rear wheel.
Except the wheel cylinder, and maybe the self adjuster (not sure about the last part)
see:

I'm thinking I'd make a bracket held on by the cover bolts and the side bolts.

Pete,

I'm confused...lol. I thought you were trying to connect a hand brake lever to a normal rear axle parking brake setup, now I see you have a drum brake on the rear of the SM465...is that stock to that trans? If so, why aren't you looking for the correct lever and linkage to put it all back stock?

Mike B smile

The panel truck is a 1961 Apache C30 (1 ton)
I bought it with no drive train.
After I bought it and started looking it over harder I couldn't find the parking brake cables.
That's when I learned it came with a trans mounted parking brake on the original SM420 trans.
So it was a floor(actually trans mounted) parking brake lever from new.
Since I know later sixes better than anything else I had no plans for putting in a 235 or 261 engine.
A 292 is a no brainer for a 1 ton truck.
The rear in that is a 5.14 so I ended up getting a manual shift 2 speed overdrive that goes between the bellhousing and the transmission which hitches everything back a bit, 7" or so.( including the holes for the shift lever and P/B lever)
The step van had a V-8 and the 465 trans with the parking brake on it.
It used a cable up to the dash board but I wanted to keep the floor lever.
So when it's done I have 3 levers to fondle. The O/D unit, the transmission, and the parking brake.
I'll have to figure out how to locate the three holes in the floor hump since it would be nice not to turn that nice flat and un-holed cover into a hatchet job.

Sounds like you need to find a brake lever and it's sector and start fabricating to make something work.

I can't help from here on as I've never done this...
