(you guys say no thing as stupid question)
As I'm about to mount the 235 on engine stand,
I 'sized' the obvious bolt holes I'll be using -
3/8-16 goes part way in. I got out little thread
gauge - unless it's wrong, these are 14 tpi.
Is this right ? Do I need to find 3/8-14 bolts ?

I don't think there is a 3/8- 14 tread on any Stovebolts. Or that size was ever produced for anything.
It is probably a 1/2-13 thread.
When I mounted a 235 on the engine stand, I used 1/2-13 bolts.
In fact, that is the only size bolt I have used, be it GM, Ford, or Chrysler.

No DB, there are no stupid questions on this site.

The only bolt size with 14 pitch threads would be 7/16 inch. But those are fairly uncommon. It's unlikely you'd find that size at your local hardware store.

I'll find out tomorrow, when I crawl under
and pull an existing bolt. Don't really see
a ½" fitting in there. It was 100º and I'm
too old to crawl around in the heat.

The stovebolt bellhousing is attached to the block with 7/16-14 thread bolts. There's no way to get a 1/2" bolt to fit unless you drill and tap the block for bigger bolts. I just finished bolting the adapter for an engine stand to a 216 block, and 235's and 261's use the same bellhousing bolts as a 216.

Truck transmissions (SM-318 and SM-420) are bolted to the bell housing with 1/2-13 bolts.

Standard thread bolts (UNC) are as follows:
3/8-16
7/16-14
1/2-13

Fine thread bolts (UNF or SAE):
3/8-24
7/16-20
1/2-20

Darn, I forgot about the 7/16-14 threads.
Thanks for the reminder!

dbwr,

It was hot here today in Fort Collins. 100 yesterday, 99 today. Tuesday it's supposed to be a high of 34 and 4 inches of snow... Gotta love Colorado!

Turns out they are indeed 7/16 x 14 tpi.

Now just need a bit more time to get to work on it.

Just as a general guide, NC bolts are usually used in cast iron and aluminum(Al).

NF bolts are usually used in steel.
