Almost ready to pull the 235 and 4-speed manual from my 61 Apache 10. From here I am looking for best practices for successful removal. I will disconnect the drive-shaft, disconnect the slave clutch line, and shift linkage/spring on the passenger side. Attach the engine lift and loosen the transmission mounting bolts and the two front motor mount bolts. Support the transmission before I start loosening anything. Pull the whole unit. (pretty sure I cant pull the engine only) What am I missing and what can I do to make sure it goes well? Much Thanks - gpk1961
Hy gpk1961, while 61 trucks are not my area of expertise I will offer hopefully helpful questions. Is there a non removable crossmember under the back of the engine? The earlier trucks which I am more familiar with that had that feature would not allow the transmission to come out with the engine. If your rear engine support crossmember is removable you will have to remove it to pull the engine and transmission together, hope that helps.
The engine and transmission have to come out together on a 61' 235 with the 4-spd manual -- then once out - I took the transmission off the bell housing. I had some difficulty getting the trans over the rear cross-member, and the top of the trans under the floor pan hump. I ended up manuvering the rear mounts off and out of the way and I removed the top of the trans. Once this was done, it came out straight away. The trans is heavy and awkward and the lower bolts are removed from inside the bell housing after you remove the lower inspection cover. Getting the nose of the truck out of the way is the easiest way to remove this engine/trans. I have other things to do, so I needed to remove it. Thanks to Stovebolt.com here and in "Driveline" for good advice. I'll update from time to time. gpk1961
Why can't the engine be removed independently of the transmission?
It can, if you're willing to do a lot of extra work. Since there are bolts holding the bellhousing to the block on a 235 that are buried behind the flywheel, you would need to remove the transmission, clutch, and flywheel anyway, unbolt the bellhousing from the block, and leave the bellhousing attached to the crossmember while you pull the engine.
If you're willing to do that, go ahead. Jerry

I will also be pulling my engine in the next few weeks on my 62 C10 with 235 and three speed column shift. My plan was to pull the transmission separately from the engine/bellhousing and leave the bellhousing, clutch and flywheel in place on the engine. I am hoping that removing the hood and radiator will give me enough room. Has anyone pulled a 235 with bellhousing attached and left the radiator core support in place?
Yes. No problem at all. One of those angle tools for your lift will help tremendously.ðŸ›

Huh, I always thought it was just four bolts to remove the transmission from the bellhousing once the driveshaft was removed. Personally I'd removed the transmission first, but his is out and he is moving forward. Am I mistaken, isn't there a removable center hump in the 4-speed trucks and the transmission is installed/removed via that giant hole in the bottom of the cab? I know the '63 manual shows them being installed/removed in this manner. Perhaps it was different before '63. I don't know, I was even born yet...lol...

DoubleDingo - yes you can remove an inspection cover and I did to remove the shifter. Now that the motor and trans are out, I am not sure I would try to remove the engine with out taking the whole thing. My tranny needed a re-build (and is complete) so I needed to anyway. GPK1961
Hi, Yes, there's a transmission or "hump" cover that is in the cab and can be easily removed. You'll have to take the shifter handle for a 4 speed off first. This comes out with a "simple" twist of the spring loaded cup at the base. Then after you remove the bolts off the cover, you have access to your transmission and can take it out independently or as a whole unit.
